THE PATHWAY TO FIGHT AT WTA

Navajo Stirling

So, you’re ready to fight?

WTA has worked with fighters on the pathway to the UFC, incredible wāhine who are inspired to set a positive example for their tamariki and humans like you who having fighting on their bucket list. We have the systems, tools and pathways in place to take you as far as you want to go in your fight journey. The best part is everything we do at WTA is tried and tested on champions.

First step, are you ready to commit?

Before you embark on any journey there are certain questions you should ask yourself to determine if you’re ready and when to begin. These principles apply to your fight journey too. We’ve seen fighters exit the journey because they were not ready, prepared or didn’t understand the commitment. Don’t let that be you.

Know when you want to fight.

Everyone has different learning styles and capabilities. You want to give yourself enough time to really hone your skills, work with a coach and put in the hard yards to get your nutrition, mindset, fitness, technique and character in check before fight day. Think practically. If you’re a student make sure you’re choosing a time that fits with exams. If you’re a parent or have work commitments think about how these might work with a fight camp. If you’re new to fighting, don’t stress — we have our own WTA formula to test your readiness before making a significant commitment.

Know your why.

Fight camps are gruelling and competing can force you to dig into some deep places to find the stamina to perform. It is in these moments that you need something compelling and meaningful to pull you through your fight journey. This is your why, your reason the number one thing you’re showing up for. If you can define what this is or at least tap into a feeling or a vibe that resonates with you, you’re already one step ahead with something substantial to support your fight.

Join the WTA Whānau

It goes without saying that to fight for WTA, you need to be an active member of WTA. We should be seeing you show up to class, being open to learning, connecting with your trainers and fellow members. This isn’t a one man sport. Trust us, you’ll need your whānau when it comes to fight day. These people are rumbling with you in shark tanks, pad holding, joining sprints with you during camp, doing the hard yards to match your fights and help you hone your technique, fitness and character so you can perform at your best.

Sign up to the WARRIOR Fight WOF.

To be able to compete for WTA, we have what is called Warrior Fight WOF. This is a gruelling 6 week program where we emulate a fight camp in a controlled environment. You make mistakes, you fall off the program, but you get enough grace to learn and get back on the fight journey. The WOF forms an excellent testing ground to see if you’re ready, see how you might fit everything in with your whānau and challenges your mind, fitness, technique and most importantly character. If you pass the WOF you can fight for WTA.

It’s time to fight.

At WTA we run our own in-house Underground shows. The vibe is unlike no other with a full-house of standing supporters, untraditional music and a handful of well-matched fighters— including you. The beauty of Underground is it gives you the opportunity to have your first taste of fighting without the pressure of thousands around you. These shows are alcohol and drug free zones. The crowd are supportive, engaged and investing in seeing new talent show their skills in the fight scene.

Post-fight care.

What we know for sure is: You cannot enter into any battle and exit the same person. Fighting will change you. It will also test you in many ways. That’s why at WTA we focus on your post fight plan as well as the pre-fight plan. In this time we’ll check in with you, process your fight, see how you’re feeling mentally and put in place a strategy to give you time to rest, recover and return to the whānau. We’re in the business of building good humans; and then great fighters. That’s why taking time at the end of the fight matters. This is also how you can build the next steps in your fight journey if you decide you want to enter the ring again.
